1. Kids, Brain Development, & ADD (ADHD) - A Long Post

    For some reason - and I don’t even remember why - I’ve been thinking about children and the development of the brain.  Specifically, I’m thinking about ADD medication and prescribing it to children.

    I’m getting ahead of myself, though.  Hello, I’m a senior in psychology and a member of the International Honor Society In Psychology.  On my senior assessment, which all psych majors at my university must take, I missed 5 points out of 200 questions.  I’m not bragging, I’m just saying: Although I am not a doctor, I do kind of know what I’m talking about here.

    First, how does ADD “work”?  To put it simply, there’s an area at the front of the brain that is working slower than the rest of the brain.  This is why the person with ADD “acts out” before they’re able to stop themselves.  For example, interrupting you while you’re talking.  This is also why stimulants are taken to treat hyperactive behavior - because it gets that part of the brain back into proper working speed!
